I was in a rush to post my HJT log because my computer was going a bit nuts. Now that it's calmed down a bit, I will describe the problem. I first noticed Google Chrome google sites were being rerouted. I went away on vacation and returned today to find all sorts of Chrome popups, fake spyware alerts and now it's telling me my task manager has been disabled by the administrator which is me and I never disabled it...below is my MABM log

Hello.

You seem to be infected with Vundo quite a lot. You're also infected with one of this rouge that I'm dealing with another member with this unable to log in issue. Refrain from doing anything right now until you hear from me otherwise it can cause problems and may lead to the situation I'm dealing with another member and cause more time to fix then it really can.

Let's start with DDS and a rootkit scan, GMER.

Download and run DDS

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results soon.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results and then click Ok.
  • The black and message box window shall then disappear.
  • Please save both log files on your desktop and post the DDS.txt and zip up and attach Attach.txt as instructed.


Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

Download and Run GMER

We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:


    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop. Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.


  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click http://billy-oneal.com/forums/gmer/gmerRandomIcon.png or http://billy-oneal.com/forums/gmer/gmerDesktopIcon.png on your desktop.

  • When you have done this, close all running programs.
    There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.

  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program. Right-click and select Run As Administrator... if you are using Vista
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

    If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system... Click NO.


  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Please UNCHECK the following:
    • Sections
    • Registry
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show all (Don't miss this one!)

  • Click on http://billy-oneal.com/forums/gmer/btnScan.png and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push http://billy-oneal.com/forums/gmer/btnSave.png and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

If GMER doesn't work in Normal Mode try running it in Safe Mode

Note: Do Not run any program while GMER is running
*Note*: Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any actions on "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I tried to download the first thing you told me to and I get the following message (which I've gotten often today) "Application cannot be exectured. The file is infected. Please activare your antivirus software" Should I try in safemode?

Try it in Safe Mode then. It should work there. Try GMER in Safe Mode as well.

How to Boot into Safe Mode

I suggest you read over the instructions on how to boot into Safe Mode and then print these instructions out or save them in Notepad because you won't have access to this page while in Safe Mode.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use your arrow keys to navigate and highlight Safe Mode.
  • Hit Enter.
  • You will now be asked to choose your operating system. Again, use the arrow keys to select Microsoft Windows XP.
  • Hit Enter.

Your computer will proceed to booting into Safe Mode. During the boot process, you may see random code go past your screen. Simply wait for it to pass. Your computer should boot like usually, except with Safe Mode written in the corners of your screen. Your screen may also appear to be a different size because the video drivers are not loaded properly in Safe Mode.

After the boot, you will be asked whether you wish to use system restore, or to continue to Safe Mode. Select OK to choose Safe mode.

Bad news, I went to reboot in Safe Mode and the computer is totally dead now. It was inexpensive to begin with so I am just opting to buy a new one rather than tinker with the old one, but thanks for your assistance

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection:



Some of the main things you should consider to perform/read are:

  • Having ONE Anti-Virus installed and running with real-time protection
  • Disabling Autorun/Play on Flash-Drive/Removable Drives
  • Avoid gaming sites, underground web pages, pirated software sites, and Peer to Peer Programs
  • Keep Windows Updated through going to Windows Updates
  • Updating Non-Microsoft Programs
  • Keeping Security softwares updated


It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Update all programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs you have installed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
