Request for Insight:

I had been comfortably working in IE7 Pro when IE8 loaded automatically. I've been an IE user for a number of years. Immediately Internet Explorer stopped working. In order to have access to the Internet, I was forced to download and install FireFox. I've been using FireFox for several months. Now, I need to access a website weekly which requires either Internet Explorer or Netscape. Since I can't get IE to work, I had to download & install Netscape.

This week I have uninstalled all Internet Explorer software, cleared all references from the registry, and reinstalled IE8. The first time, there was no indication the IE8 had loaded - no icons on the desktop, start menu, or program list. So, I downloaded the file again and installed it. This install took longer (and indicated that it was uninstalling IE7) and appeared to load OK but when done there was still no icon or reference to the program in the Program file.

I can start IE by going to the Program Files directory and clicking on the iexplore.exe file. I created a shortcuit on the desktop to make it easier to open IE8. However, the program loads and "hangs" as it is searching for MSRATING.DLL. Then I get an error message and the program closes. Subsequently, I have searched the drive for the MSRATING.DLL file and find 10-12 copies of the file in various directories. Still IE8 doesn't find the MSRATING.DLL file and will not allow the program to continue.

This is very frustrating. I've spent hours searching for malware, viruses, and other types of negative interactions with the software.

Can someone provide a clue as to how to get IE8 going again? Although I'm not an IT tech, I do have extensive experience working with computers and doing much of my own work maintaining my computers.

I simply cannot tell you how frustrating this situation has been - and I've been struggling with it on and off for about five months.
