:killcomp: Whenever I reboot (doesn't matter how), I get the following error message:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Etc. Etc.
For more information about this error, click here."

Clicking "Click here" shows me the error signature...

AppName: svchost.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.5512 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00406a49

Then, that one has a link to click for technical information about the error report.
I'll provide links to the error report that I'm storing on my server so you guys can hopefully make some sense of this problem.
(apparantly, I can't copy and paste the information from the error report contents window which seems to include a hexdump of certain memory spaces, so all I can do is link to the error report log): Error Report Log (sorry about RARing it... the .txt link didn't work). Also, this computer is running Windows XP Pro with all Windows Updates except IE7/8 and .NET 3.5. I haven't installed anything new recently since this started, so I dunno.
Let me know what you think and thanks in advance.

Aaron B.

(Edit: I forgot to mention, sometimes when I click reboot and occasionally logoff, I have to click whichever one twice to get it to do that action.)

So you still have IE6 on your system? Do you use that for your internet browsing or are you using an alternative browser? (ie. Firefox, Opera) I cannot say that it is directly linked to the problems you're having but if you do use Internet Explorer it is worth updating it. IE 6 is pretty ancient now and it has become a popular target for system infection, as it is quite common that people don't bother updating it.

Kind Regards
Simon.

I'm using IE6 as the default browser, though I do occasionally use Firefox. I'm holding off with upgrading to a newer IE to avoid making the computer more difficult to use for my mom (she's not very computer literate).
Actually, just recently, downloaded and installed the beta of Windows 7, found out that it didn't work and deleted the partition that it was on, but the bootloader got left on my drive (and not just the bootloader... the bootscreen too... kinda baffled by that one).

Hello.

We apologize for the delay that no one has responded yet.

Let's see what we can help you with the error message you recieve at startup.

First, I want some more information:

1) What is the manufacture of this computer? Is it Hewlett-Packard, Dell etc...
2) What Service Pack is this computer? You can find out by right-clicking on My Computer and select Properties.
3) When did this problem occur? Have you tried doing a System Restore to return to a previous state before your problems began?

---

Next, I want you to download and run Process Explorer for a detialed process list.

Download and Run Process Explorer

  • Please download process explorer from here -> http://technet.micro...s/bb896653.aspx
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Now extract the compressed file by right-clicking on it and select Extract All... Follow the prompts to finsih extracting it.
  • Double-click on procexp.exe application. Go to File -> Show Details for All Processes.
  • Now go File -> Save as...
  • Save it to your desktop named Procexp.txt.

Please attach the text file saved to your next post.

Determining Services Running Under Svchost.exe

  • Please go to Start >> Run >> In the open field please type in: Cmd
  • Now press Ok and a black DOS window shall appear.
  • Please Copy the following line by highlighting it and right-click and select Copy:

    tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe"

  • Now go back to the Black DOS window. Please right-click and select Paste.
  • This should paste the code above into the DOS window.
  • Now hit Enter on your Keyboard.
  • A few text will be "populated" in that window.

  • Please right-click on the DOS window and select Select All.
  • This should highlight everything in that window.
  • While everything is higlighted, please hit Enter on your keyboard.
  • There should be no more highlights on the window.

  • Now open notepad. You can do this by going to Start >> Run >> In the open field type in Notepad and hit Ok.
  • When Notepad opens, please right-click in the empty notepad and press Paste.
  • This should paste everything in the DOS window into Notepad.
  • Save this file by going to File >> Save As... and save it your desktop naming it services.txt.

---
Please copy and paste the contents of that log file in your next reply in addition to the Procexp.txt log from Process Explorer. Also, answer my questions that I asked.

From there, then we can do some more diagnosing and investigating to see what is the cause of this issue. There are many issues of this and there is no ONE constant fix for it and therefore we must have some more information to see.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
